The next morning, she felt so drained that she shortened her lecture and was heading back to the department when she saw Dr. Obaku striding toward her. The students must have told him about their truncated class. As he began talking, she braced herself for the reprimand. What could she tell him? Certainly not that his subordinate had just broken her heart.

“Dr. Sally! You seem in another world. I said do you think your university would spare you?” His insistent tone jolted her into attention.

“What? I’m sorry. I’m a little tired.” She had totally spaced what he’d been saying. Matters would worsen now.

“My English is too accented,” he excused her. “No wonder you have difficulty comprehending me. No doubt my voice also softened because of embarrassment at the mix-up.”

“Yes, mix-up.” She’d never shortened class before. The one time she lapsed, she got caught. “Perhaps...”

Dr. Obaku interrupted by lifting his hand for her to listen. She heard dimly through her worry’s static.

The university was pleased with her work and wanted the Fulbright Commission to extend her grant. Unfortunately, the deadline for Fulbright extensions was past. Dr. Obaku had found the renewal forms buried beneath scripts on Ako’s desk. He couldn’t imagine such a confusion, but had rushed the papers to Washington. He was mortified at the mix-up and prayed she would arrange matters at her university.
